The mission of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for women is to promote friendship, develop women of intellect and integrity, cultivate leadership potential and enrich lives through community service

Pi Beta Phi is an international organization that was founded more than 140 years ago at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. We were founded on April 28, 1867 and were originally named I.C. Sorosis. Pi Beta Phi was the first national secret college society of women to be modeled after Greek-letter fraternities of men. During a time when a few women were admitted to colleges and universities, Pi Beta Phi created a feeling of unity among pioneering women.

Since 1867 Pi Beta Phi has grown, and now includes more than 240,000 women worldwide. Famous Pi Phi’s include first Ladies Grace Coolidge and Barbara Bush, actresses Jennifer Garner and Faye Dunaway, senators Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt!
Pi Beta Phi Fraternity is a values-based organization in which individual development is a key component of the mission and vision of the organization. Pi Beta Phi attracts women who possess a desire to be a part of a dynamic organization that will promote growth in all areas of life. Our core values are: integrity, honor and respect, lifelong commitment, personal and intellectual growth, philanthropic service to others, and sincere friendship. Pi Phi values leadership, academics, service, intellectual development and balance in our members.
With a presence at major universities in 43 states and Canada, more than 13,000 collegiate members and 330 alumnae organizations and hundreds of thousands of women claiming membership, Pi Beta Phi works hard to provide ongoing support for all members as they continue a journey of lifelong commitment to the Fraternity.
As a member of Pi Beta Phi, you will discover a home away from home on your campus! Let Pi Beta Phi come alongside you as you discover your passions and dreams during the most formative years of your life.

    Chapter Facts

The California Kappa chapter of Phi Beta Phi was established at UCSD in 1960. CA Kappa's philanthropic involvement promotes literacy initiatives through not only the Surf Classic, but through Speed Read, a children's book reading fundraiser, and the Champions Are Readers program which allows the ladies to volunteer at a local elementary school.

Pi Beta Phi is dedicated to philanthropic and community service efforts that will remove the barrier of illiteracy. Our annual Surf Classic raises money for the Pi Beta Phi Literacy Initiative. In the past six years that the event has been held, it has grown enormously. This year the competition was televised nationally throughout the summer on Planet X (an active sports channel), and attracted many professional surfers locally as well as from Hawaii and Australia. All proceeds from the competition go to First Book, our partner in promoting literacy and education across the nation.
